augmented reality

augmented reality is a man-machine-interface where digital information is projected in the user's field of view.

during the last years there has been a lot of activity by the industry regarding augmented and virtual reality. especially in medicine and automobile industry some interesting applications evolved. the surgeon gets assistance while an operation by projecting information about the patient on seethrough goggles. engeneers do not need physical design prototypes in early stages of the process anymore. they are testing design and ergonomy in virtual models.

unfortunately the interfaces of these applications are direct adoptions of classic mediums and thus are not using the potential of this new medium. there is a lot of work to do in this area for designers.
